The probes for temperature were located 0.5 inches below the surface. We installed two probes per location so we could compare the accuracy of our data.

In the early months you can see daily temperature swings, but by October the ground is a near constant cold temperature. The trend line shows a general warming by early January. Click

The probes for this upper sample area were again installed at 0.5 inches below the surface. There is a 25 feet difference in vertical elevation between the two locations. This upper site is also deeper in the stand of birch trees.

Much of the data looks similar, with the exception of temperature swings early in the data collection season. The penetration of sunlight may account for much of the differences seen between these two graphs. To see an enlarged versions of the graphs, click on them.
