To the right you see Joe, and some of our equipment. He is measuring the depth of one of the pits that we put the soil moisture probes into. During the sap run in the spring these probes will tell how much unfrozen soil moisture is available to the birch trees.
On the bank you can see the journal we used to record all of our data in when we work outside. The coils of cable are attached to the soil moisture probes. These are little boxes with a pair of metal probes sticking out the end.
